Proper Ladder Use - General Ladder Safety
There are several things you should know about using a ladder safely. Here is some general ladder safety information:

- Do not use a ladder in bad weather such as high winds or storms.
- Do not climb on a ladder if you have any type of balance issues.
- The ladder feet must always be on firm and level ground prior to using the ladder.
- If you use a ladder near a door or walkway, take needed precautions. Lock the door, block it open, or have someone stand guard. Block off the area in busy traffic areas to ensure no incidents occur.

Stepladder Use

- Keep the stepladder close to the work. Move the stepladder when needed to avoid excessive reaching.
- Avoid having to reach too far in any direction. Over-reaching produces instability and can cause you to fall.
Single or Straight Ladder Use

- Securing the top of the ladder increases stability.
- The ladder must be tied to the upper access level before climbing on or off the ladder at the upper level (such as getting onto a roof).

- You must be careful getting on or off straight ladders to avoid tipping them or causing the ladder base to slide.
Extension Ladder Use

- Maintain the minimum overlap of sections as shown on the ladder label; refer to safety regulations.
