Key Concepts 

  • A confined space is an area that is difficult to enter and exit.
  • A confined space is not designed for someone to work in on a regular basis; entry would be required occasionally for inspection, cleaning, maintenance or repair.
  • A confined space is an enclosed or partially enclosed area that is big enough for a worker to enter.
  • A confined space can be above or below ground.
  • All hazards found on a regular worksite can also be found in a confined space, however they can be even more hazardous in a confined space.
  • The confined space needs to be assessed and proper procedures followed, when entering a confined space.
  • There are Safe Work Permits, Safe Practice Codes and Entry Permits associated with confined spaces.
  • There are both federal and provincial legislation that needs to be understood when dealing with confined spaces.
  •  There are specific training and rescue plans that need to be understood when working in confined spaces.
