Lesson 1: WHMIS - An Introduction
What is WHMIS?
-
WHMIS stands for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
-
WHMIS is a Canadian hazard information system that was started to help workers know about hazardous materials.
- Every province in Canada has a WHMIS regulation; WHMIS is the law (Lesson Six).
-
WHMIS protects workers from materials that, if not properly handled, can cause harm, injury, or death.
- WHMIS could be compared to the information provided on food products, i.e. supplier, ingredients and how to use (cook) the product. In WHMIS, containers of hazardous material must identify the supplier, the list of hazardous ingredients, and information on how to use the material safely.
- WHMIS provides very detailed information about each Controlled Product.
-
WHMIS consists of the following three main components:
-
Labels
-
Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
-
Education and training in handling hazardous/controlled products.
-
You can also earn a WHMIS certificate by going to the Alberta Construction Safety Association; for a limited time there is a cost for this training.
