Lesson 5: Fauna of Banff's Montane Forest




All the animal life of a particular place or time is known as the fauna of the region. Some of Banff's fauna is found in the montane forest, which provides abundant food and shelter.

Commonly spotted species include deer, elk, caribou, moose, wolves, coyotes, grizzly bear, black bear and small mammals such as squirrels, marmots, beavers.









A great variety of birds also inhabits this ecosystem, including the following:

      • grouse
      • ptarmigans
      • bald eagles
      • golden eagles
      • loons
      • canada geese
      • songbirds
