In Social Studies 9, you will continue to become an engaged, active, informed, and responsible citizen. You will have learning opportunities to develop the key values and attitudes, knowledge and understanding, and skills and processes necessary to be active and responsible citizens engaged in the democratic process and aware of your ability to effect change in your community, society, and the world.

You will explore multiple perspectives, including Aboriginal and Francophone. You will become well informed about diversity and differing perspectives as you continue to develop an understanding of who you are, what you want to become, and the society in which you want to live.

Outcomes
The six strands of social studies will form the basis of all learning outcomes.

The strands include:

  • history: time, continuity, and change
  • geography: the land-people and places
  • political science: power, authority, and decision-making
  • economics: economics and resources
  • globalization: global connections
  • sociology and anthropology: culture and community

Grade 9 Social Studies focuses on citizenship, identity, and quality of life and how they are impacted by political and legislative processes in Canada. The role of economic systems in Canada and the United States are also examined.

Course Overview

Social Studies 9 has five units:

  • Unit 2: Protecting Rights and Freedoms
  • Unit 3: Collective Rights and Immigration
  • Unit 4: Economic Systems in Canada and the United States
