As a Canadian citizen, you have many rights and freedoms, such as legal rights, equality rights, and mobility rights. These are protected under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which is part of our constitution and the basis of our laws in Canada.

Canada has laws because its citizens value peace, order, and good government. These laws protect our freedom and keep us free from oppression.

As a youth in Canada, you are also protected by the law. The present youth laws are covered in the Youth Criminal Justice Act, which is designed to ensure fair and equitable treatment of youth. This is different, by law, than the treatment of adult offenders.

In Unit 2, you will examine how the laws of Canada are established to protect all Canadians by examining this focus question:

How does Canada ensure the rights and freedoms for all Canadians?

You will explore the focus question as you complete the two sections:

• Section 1: Canada's Justice System
• Section 2: Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms

Within each section, you will complete

• an Inquiry Activity
• activities
• assignments

You are expected to complete all activities and assignments in the unit.

All your handouts, journal responses, and activities will be saved to your Activities folder. Completed assignments will be submitted for marking.

As you work through the sections, you will be developing the resources to complete the Unit 2 Quiz.
