Activity 2: Provincial Government Policies
Get Focused
From 2006 to 2008, Alberta had one of the fastest growing economies in Canada. As a result, the Alberta government implemented a policy to attract and retain skilled workers from abroad. The aim of the province is to attract at least 24 000 immigrants to Alberta each year.

The Alberta government has an official immigration website. People from all over the world can read about Alberta and learn what makes Alberta such a desirable destination for many immigrants.
When the economy is growing rapidly, many communities in Alberta require workers to fill different jobs - from servers in restaurants to welders and machinists in the oilfield industry. Perhaps you have noticed a need for workers in your community.
Imagine that the Alberta government wants to expand its website to include various perspectives.
- Compile a list of benefits of living in Alberta from the
perspective of a Grade 9 student.
- Interview an adult member of your community to create a list of the benefits of living in Alberta from an adult perspective.
Save your list of benefits and the list of benefits from your interview to your Activities folder.
In this activity you will answer this inquiry question:
How are provincial governments able to influence and implement immigration policies?
