Unit 5 Introduction
In Canada, we have a mixed economy, which is an economic system based on co-operation between the government and the people. The government has an important role in the economy and makes many economic decisions on behalf of the people. Often,
the political party in power determines how much government influence occurs in the economy of Canada.
The United States economy is based on the principles of a market economy, which is based on the idea of individualism. In the United States, individual economic decision-making is valued and encouraged, and government involvement is less than in Canada. However, the amount of government involvement is still a result of which political party is in power.
The values of a political party influence directly where that political party falls on the economic continuum. A political party that favours government spending is on the left of centre; a political party that favours less government spending is on the right. The amount of government spending has a direct influence on taxation, social programs, and how the government addresses such issues as industry and the environment.
Unit 5 focuses on the relationship between social programs and taxation in Canada and in the United States. You will examine the various economic policies of the Liberal and Conservative parties of Canada and the Republican and Democratic parties of the United States. You will identify the important relationship between political and economic decision-making as you investigate an environmental issue. You will see how decisions are made that affect quality of life.
