2.2.2 What is Imperialism?

What is imperialism?

imperialism
Domination by one or more countries over others in order to gain power and wealth.

It can be take place through the use of weapons, economic control or political power by a powerful nation.

Economic imperialism is when a powerful nation or a powerful corporation takes control of another country in order to make money for itself.

Cultural imperialism takes place when a dominant culture overpowers another culture.
Imperialism or empire building occurs when countries expand their territories by taking control of other countries. For example, both France and England had empires in the past. Both controlled many parts of the world. Imperialist countries use better technology, military power, and financial power to control other countries.

Economic Power: In an imperialist system, one country takes advantage of another. The imperialist nation uses the land, resources, and people so that it can get rich.

Political Power: An empire consists of one powerful nation controlling several other nations. The government of the empire is in charge of all its territories and resources. The area that is directly controlled is called a colony. Sometimes one of these places is under indirect control. Canada was once a colony of France, and later, England. That is why French and English are our two official languages.

Consider the historical cartoon at right. It shows British industrialist and imperialist Cecil Rhodes who controlled much of Africa. He built a railroad across Africa, founded the first diamond company in Africa, and owned the British South Africa Company. Rhodes once said, "All of these stars... these vast worlds that remain out of reach.  If I could, I would annex other planets."

In other words, Rhodes said that, if he could have taken over outer space for his own personal gain, he would have.

Using your critical viewing skills, note the following in the drawing:

  • The shadow under Rhodes is the map of Africa, showing how the whole continent was in his shadow.

  • He holds strings attached to both ends of the continent, as if he could control it as it it were a puppet.

  • He is huge and carries a large gun, showing his power.

  • His hands are outstretched, showing both pride and control.
