Unit Three Review

How should contemporary society respond to the legacies of historical globalization?

In this unit, you looked at the following questions:

  • How do worldviews shape our actions?
  • What are the legacies of historical globalization and imperialism?
  • What attempts have been made to deal with the wrongs of the past?

What did you learn?

We all have worldviews and unique perspectives that colour not just our thoughts but our actions. For example, many of the people who worked in Canada's residential schools believed sincerely that they were helping Aboriginal people. Today, society realizes that the government's policy of assimilation harmed thousands of people. To be aware of your own perspective and the perspectives of others is important.

In the last unit, you looked at imperialism as a historical event. In this unit, you looked at some of the long term legacies or effects of imperialism on the world today. You explored the effect of the policies of assimilation on Canada's First Nations and Inuit people including the inter-generational effects of residential schools and the ongoing issues of unresolved land claims.

In fact, the legacies of historical imperialism continue to affect Canada and other nations around the world. Citizens of many countries need to decide how to respond to these legacies. Should they research the causes of problems and find reasoned solutions to the problems that were left behind? Should they listen to the voices of those who were harmed and ask them to be part of the solution? Or should they ignore them and hope they go away?

Those are questions that you, as a citizen, must answer for yourself.

After reviewing the feedback on your first attempt, you may complete the quiz a second time. If you make a second attempt on the quiz, your mark will be the average of the two attempts.
