5.2.1 The Expansion of Globalization

Why has globalization expanded so rapidly in recent times?

In the last three units, you learned about the history of globalization and imperialism. You learned that people throughout the world have been connected through trade, travel, and technology for a very long time. People have always looked for adventure and a better life as well as for power and wealth.

In recent times, globalization has increased at a tremendous speed. Today, people can travel from one part of the world to another in record time. They can talk with friends, relatives, and total strangers in faraway lands. They can buy products from other countries at very reasonable prices. If a disaster strikes almost anywhere in the world, the news travels almost immediately. A designer can see a dress on someone at the Academy Awards on one night and have it available for order the next day.

What has led to this rapid increase in global connections?
