6.4.5 What Can We Do?

How can we reduce the environmental impact of globalization?

What can individuals do to help the environment?

  1. Consume less. Don't buy so much stuff!

  2. Change your eating habits. Eat less meat, consume organic produce, and buy locally-grown products to reduce your effect on the environment.

  3. Replace your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.

  4. Walk, bike, or carpool.

  5. Recycle. The average household can save up to 1100 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year by recycling half of its household waste.

  6. Use less hot water. Install a low-flow shower head, or take shorter or fewer showers. Turn down the heat on your hot water heater by one or two degrees.

  7. Avoid packaging whenever possible.

  8. Adjust your thermostat. Moving your thermostat down two degrees in the winter and reducing the use of air-conditioning in the summer could save over 900 kilograms of carbon dioxide a year.

  9. Plant a tree. One tree absorbs nearly a tonne of carbon dioxide in its lifetime.

  10. Unplug your electronic devices when they are not in use. If you are using a rechargeable device, unplug it when it is finished recharging.

  11. Tell others. Spread the word. Working together, we can make a difference.
