7.2.8 Collaboration and Communities

Are people becoming more alike because of globalization?

Globalization presents tremendous opportunities for the citizens of the world to enrich their identities as individuals and as members of communities. Through contact with people around the world, new discoveries and new ways of doing things are being discovered and shared constantly.

Deeper and broader connection: Globalization is all about the ways people are becoming more connected with each other. The media, especially the Internet, allow us to create communities of people with similar interests and help us to expand our understanding of how the world works and where we fit.

Improved cultural understanding: As we become more connected with people through technology, travel, trade, and migration, we learn to see their unique perspectives and worldviews. The case study of Flickr is just one example of how people create communities online.

Case Study: Flickr

Flickr is a photo-sharing website on which people can share and search for photos. Many beautiful images are taken by amateur photographers who want to share what they have seen. Flickr allows individuals to contact one another, form galleries of similar images, view slide shows, and link to other sites.

Flickr is a community. Flickr provides people with a chance to get to know each other and to work together on issues in which they believe. Because many people take photos of their travels and many members of the community have travelled to the developing world, their experiences have led them to a deeper understanding of the developing world and have also inspired them to do something to help.

One such person is Kresta King Cutcher, who goes by the Flickr nickname "camera-rwanda". Kresta is a high school teacher from Arizona. After reading about Rwanda, she travelled there to teach the children about photography. She posted her amazing photos on the Flickr site. She sold many photos and gave away many more to organizations - such as this school for this course - to spread the word about the situation in Rwanda.

Thousands of other viewers were inspired by her images and began to contribute to the non-profit organizations she suggested. She met other photographers with similar goals. Many people who have visited her site have told her that they return to see her pictures to remind them of the larger world. Her images have enriched their understanding and identity.

Has Flickr made a difference to Kresta King Cutcher? In her own words, "Developing contacts through Flickr has really inspired me to take my photography a step further. I am passionate about using photography to help humanitarian efforts and raise awareness of AIDS, poverty, and children's rights, especially in Africa. Flickr has enabled me to begin to do this."
