The World's First Global War

Imperialism often leads to conflict as nations fight to control more and more territory. Britain was already fighting at home in the world's first global war. Imperialism was making its mark as every country in Europe fought at home and fought for territory around the world. The Seven Years War was the war fought in Europe. This same war was carried into North America where it was called the French and Indian War. In the French and Indian War, the British and the French used different native tribes in their struggle for control. When the British won, they gave the French in Canada certain rights, including rights to lands that the Americans considered theirs.

  • The Seven Years' War (1756-1763) was fought between Britain and her colonies in North America and India, Prussia, and Hanover fighting against France, Austria, Sweden, Saxony, Russia, and eventually Spain. Britain refused to send troops to fight in mainland Europe, but it concentrated on the destruction of the French navy and merchant fleet, the seizure of its colonies, and the elimination of France as a commercial rival.

  • The French and Indian War (1754-1763) was a conflict in North America between Britain and her colonies against France and her colonies, with both sides using native warriors. The war resulted in France's loss of all its possessions in North America, except for some Caribbean islands and Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, two small islands near Newfoundland.
