Black Robes

Catholic missionaries were brought to Canada by Champlain. These men were educated and brave and intended to evangelize the native people. Early priests wrote detailed accounts of the Hurons, including a phrasebook of the Huron language. The priests wrote many accounts of the life and culture of the Aboriginal people, which were published in Europe. This taught European civilizations about cultures completely different from their own. This knowledge helped evangelists learn more about the cultures they were attempting to convert, and it has also left a record of a way of life that no longer exists.
