Lesson 10 — Activity 1:

Reactants and Products

Imagine 1,500,000 litres of liquid hydrogen combining with 545,000 litres of liquid oxygen to form water! WOW!!

This is what happens when the space shuttle is launched into outer space. The chemical reaction between the liquid hydrogen and the liquid oxygen propels the rocket at speeds over 35,000 km per hour (22,000 miles per hour)! That's an amazing chemical reaction!

In this activity, you will learn about the reactants and products that occur during a chemical reaction.

Let's begin by watching a chemical reaction first hand. Click on the Play button below to see a space shuttle being launched.

All the exhaust you see in the video is the result of a chemical reaction between liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.

Every chemical reaction consists of two parts:

  • The reactants are the substances involved in the chemical reaction.
  • The products are the result of the reaction.
