Lesson 28 — Activity 1:

The Dangerous Nature of Space

Explore

To realize just how dangerous space exploration is, you will watch the movie Apollo 13, which is about a near disastrous space accident.

People had become very complacent about voyages into space as many had occurred without any problems. Then came a near tragedy that made people realize that space exploration was anything but routine. Three astronauts faced the prospect of being left stranded in space with no chance of a rescue after their spacecraft broke down. They were only saved by the creative genius of engineers on Earth who worked to find a way to repair the problem using items that were on the Apollo 13 spacecraft.

Activity

  1. Talk to your teacher about how you are going to get the movie. Many schools have their own copies. Choose a time and place to watch the movie. If you watch it at school, you will probably have to watch it over two days, so plan for this.
NOTE: If you are unable to watch this movie, you and your teacher can make alternative arrangements for this lesson and the quiz that follows.

Before viewing the movie, review the questions on the document in the box below once you have printed it. It is recommended that you stop the movie once in awhile to make notes so you can answer the questions after you have watched the movie.

Click here  to download a copy of the questions that you will need for the assignment that follows. Print off the questions and be sure to have them with you as you watch the movie so that you can make notes.

NOTE: You can use the printed copy of the questions to make notes as you watch the movie. However, you will answer these multiple-choice questions in the assignment that follows once you have finished watching the movie.
