Lesson 5: Timber Supply and Weed Prevention
"Waste not, want not" is a wise saying that applies to timber harvest in our forests. The prevention of losses through various means, including losses due to noxious weeds and invasive plants, is an important part of good forest stewardship.
Timber is not Wasted
- Trees are protected from windthrow losses; windthrow refers to trees that have been uprooted by the wind.
- Man-caused forest fires are prevented.
- Damaged or threatened trees are salvaged.
- Losses due to insects and disease are minimized.

Spread of Weeds is Prevented
-
Machinery is cleaned before moving from one area to another.
-
Weeds and seeds are prevented from being carried by workers' boots and clothing from one area to another.
- Noxious weeds and invasive plants are identified and controlled.
