Unit 4 - Alberta's Integrated Resource Planning

Lesson 1: A Vision for Canada's and Alberta's Forests

Canada's Vision

In December 2008, the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (CCFM) released "A Vision for Canada's Forests: 2008 and Beyond." The Vision is meant to improve Canada's forest management practices through various strategies, including the following:

  • encourage domestic and international engagement on forest management issues,
  • facilitate the creation of partnerships among traditional and non-traditional forest users,
  • reaffirm Canada's continuing commitment to sustainable forest management

Alberta's Role in the Vision

In 2008, when the Vision was release, the then Alberta's Ministry of Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) participated in the development of the Vision. The current department of Agriculture and Forestry is committed to the advancement and success of the Vision.
To address forest management concerns, Alberta's ministry is encouraging individuals and organizations in Alberta's forest sector to do the following:

  • creatively meet the goals outlined in the Vision

  • set a new course for innovative forest management in the province

To the left, these future users of Alberta' forest resources are the main reason for Alberta's commitment to sustainable forest management and stewardship.

Alberta has many reasons to protect its vast, majestic forests. Our forest resources are best protected and sustainably developed by the creation of partnerships among traditional and non-traditional forest users, as stated in "A Vision for Canada's Forests: 2008 and Beyond."
