Unit 5 - Alberta's Land-use Framework

Lesson 7: Monitoring for Continuous Improvement

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

The Alberta government must assess the regional planning progress to ensure objectives and outcomes are met. A system of monitoring, evaluating, and reporting is undertaken to determine the effectiveness of regional plans (example, to determine if land-use strategies actually fulfill the regional plans' objectives and outcomes).

The cycle of monitoring, evaluating, and reporting is on-going. It encourages continuous improvements in decision-making and actions to ensure future generations achieve the desired economic, environmental, and social outcomes in each planning region.

  • Monitoring using a variety of government and non-government sources, the government will collect and use data for indicators about the progress on the regional plans regarding outcomes. Data trends will be monitored to note any changes occuring within the regions.
  • Evaluation the monitoring data will be evaluated against the limits and triggers established for the region (example, air quality, surface water quality, groundwater quality, and biodiversity).
  • Reporting government will communicate on regional plan to the public. Various communication mechanisms will be used. Information and progress updates for each regional plan will be posted on designated websites.

At least once every five years, the regional plans will be reviewed to ensure they are meeting the outcomes and objectives.
