Writing Conventions

Welcome to the most important "unit" in Language Arts 9!
This unit is important because it will help you become a more confident writer, and being a more confident writer will help you in all of the other units in this course - and in all of your other studies, as well!
Use the information on these Moodle pages and in your iSkills Starts with the Sentence book as a reference to help you verify correct usage of the concepts discussed, address uncertainties, and solve problems that may arise as you work through all of the other units in this course.
We will focus on four areas in this unit:
- Punctuation - commas, apostrophes, quotation marks and inside punctuation
- Parts of Speech - verbs, pronouns and prepositional phrases, conjunctions, subordination and apposition
- Sentence structure - fragments, run-ons, variety in types and lengths
- Word Choice - commonly confused words, needless overused words, and using parallel form
Each of the four areas above has a Workshop in this unit. In each workshop there is a short lesson and a quiz for each of the identified skills. For additional instruction and practice in any of the Workshop concepts, visit the IXL Education website.
I suggest starting in the first workshop and attempting to get through all of its activities first. Once you have successfully passed all of the quizzes in that Workshop (a grade of 70% must be achieved) you have a choice: continue to the next Workshop and get it out of the way, or move into Unit 1 and start working through the regular lessons. If you choose to work in Unit 1, do not forget that you will need to return to this unit to finish the rest of the Workshops.
While you do not have to complete all of the activities in this unit in linear order, all of the quizzes in this unit must be completed before the midterm exam (which is written at the end of Unit 3) will be released.
I strongly recommend getting it finished as quickly as possible so you can use your new learning to better demonstrate your understanding in the other units. The second half of the course will not be released until this unit is finished. In all work after the midterm exam, you will be expected to have mastered these skills.
