Sequencing Graphic Stories

Because graphic stories rely so much on visual information, you must have a thorough understanding of visual elements in general, such as line, camera angle, proportion, white space and the rule of thirds.

However, certain visual elements are unique to graphic storytelling.

Sequence

In graphic storytelling, images are arranged (composed and sequenced) deliberately, enabling readers to follow and be entertained.

Sequencing is the order in which the panels or frames are shown.

This can be done according to size or events or by the spatial choices the creator makes about the order in which they should be viewed.

In Figure 5, the frames are sequenced by order of events, to be read from left to right (1 -2), then down, and left to right again (3-4).
