Text

Words in comics are the ultimate abstraction. Written sound effects, dialogue, changes in typeface, design, and texture in the piece provide the reader with clues to the story’s meaning.

Speech is contained in different types of word balloons or boxes:

     Figure 9
  • Thought bubbles contain the thoughts of characters β€” thoughts shared with others.

  • Speech bubbles show the dialogue of characters and usually have a point, a line, or a stem directing the reader to who is talking.

  • narrative box is more like a voice-over or caption, but it is not dialogue like the speech bubbles are. Narrative boxes contribute information about the plot of a story.

Another type of speech is sound effects.

Speech and sound effects are written in different typeface (fonts). Typeface or typography refers to the appearance or design of lettering. Much thought goes into this!

Lettering or typeface can reveal the tone, mood, voice or attitude of the character speaking. If you are interested in seeing, using, or even designing your own typeface, check www.dafont.com.
