“The Perfect World of Ewan McLaughlin”

The story “The Perfect World of Ewan McLaughlin” by Linda Little is set in the 1800s when knowledge of autism was limited.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects the way the brain functions.  It ranges from mild to severe.  People with ASD typically have some difficulty interacting with other people because they cannot read facial expressions or hear various tones of voice.  Some prefer repetitive activities and follow strict routines.  Some have exceptional talents and abilities because they can focus intently on preferred tasks.

Before reading the story, view this video in which Joshua Littman, a 12-year old boy with Asperger's Syndrome interviews his mother.  This video provides context for  "The Perfect World of Ewan McLaughlin" .
