Active Viewing Strategies

When you began the unit, you likely watched films purely for the sake of enjoyment. Actively viewing the film you choose to study will deepen your understanding of the film and your appreciation of the efforts that went into its production.

As you watch the film, you will react to what you see and hear. Remember, active viewing requires you to think of how the director caused your reactions through the use of cinematic techniques. You will also speculate about why those choices were made.

Viewing Tips

Viewing a film actively can feel  overwhelming, but...
  • remember, you can pause, rewind and re-watch a scene as often as you wish
  • ensure you set your media player so you can see the timestamps and subtitles as you watch
  • use the information and chart in the Lesson 7-3 Assignment file to record your observations
