Possible Answers for Reading Strategies
Strategy |
How it helped |
Set a purpose |
When I read the title, I knew it would be about choosing a leader and that there would probably be a moral at the end. |
Ask and answer questions |
What are the important qualities of leadership? All the animals had different gifts, but it seemed like the important ones were the ones the rabbit had – patience, calm, humility. Knowing they all had to work together was also an important quality. |
Make predictions and see if they come true |
I predicted the rabbit would be chosen leader because all the other animals were anxious to get started but the rabbit just waited and took it slowly. When the rabbit started helping the other animals, I knew that the story was going to be about helping others. |
Make a personal connection |
Many stories I read when I was little were about animals and had morals at the end, such as Aesop's Fables. |
Visualize or draw |
I pictured what the animals looked like, and when they had to get out of their traps, I tried to picture how they did it. |
Slow down |
I wanted to know what happened so I read fast and I missed some parts, such as how they all helped to get the buffalo out. |
Re-read |
I went back and read the part about how they got the buffalo out. |
Look up unfamiliar or difficult words |
In the tips, I saw the word "anthropomorphism" and I read the definition. I had never heard that word but, when I read the definition, I knew what it meant. The names were sometimes difficult to pronounce, so I made up what they might sound like. |
