Unit 1

Early Canada

  Read

The three main types of Aboriginal economies at this time were hunter-gatherer economy, farming economy, and trading network economy.

These economies were based largely on food supply.

  1. Read the information on pages 26 to 28 of your textbook to learn about these economies.
  2. Then, read the summaries of the economies in the coloured boxes.
Hunter-Gatherers
This type of economy relied on plants and in-season hunting and fishing. Most food was eaten fresh; some meat was dried and kept for winter. Hunters had to move camps with the seasons.
Farming
Farming was possible only in places with good soil. Farmers stayed in the same places and did not travel.
Trading Networks
Aboriginal societies traded goods with each other on trade routes. When Europeans arrived, they joined the Aboriginal trade network.
