  Chapter 1 Assessment

You have learned about three very important societies who were the first inhabitants of Canada. This begins your journey as you continue to learn about great explorers who helped form what we call Canada.

  1. In which Aboriginal society would you like to have lived?
      • Look more closely at one of the three Aboriginal societies you studied in Chapter 1 and construct a presentation about it.
  2. Choose one of the following Aboriginal societies:
      • Mi’kmaq
      • Haudenosaunee
      • Anishinabe
  3. Answer each of the following questions in your presentation.
      • Communication
        • What is the name of the society?
        • What was their language?

      • Social Structure
        • What was the society’s worldview or values?
        • What were the roles of men and women in the society?
        • What recreation or education did they have?
        • What was the structure of their government?
        • How did they make decisions?

      • Economy
        • What type of economy did they have for food and shelter?

      • Other
        • What characteristics about this society make it unique or special?
        • Why would you have liked to live in this society? Explain.
  4. Use information from Chapter 1 of the textbook to assist you.
  5. If you wish, you may research websites to find additional information about the society you have chosen.

    Be sure     to identify the sources you have used at the end of your presentation.  Be sure to provide exact web addresses of sites you have used. (Please note that general search engines such as www.google.com or www.yahoo.com are not exact website addresses!)
    1. For your presentation, construct one of the following:
        • a PowerPoint presentation

        • your own graphic organizer

          Find or create an appropriate organizer and type the information needed into the organizer.  If you choose, you can construct your organizer in Microsoft Word.

        • brochure

    Be sure your final product meets the following criteria:

    • Your final product must contain images and text.

    • Your final product must answer all the questions outlined in the instructions above.

    • At the end of your presentation, identify the sources you have used to gather information.
