Early Canada
In the early 1600s, France decided to build a colony in North America.
The King of France knew the colony would be expensive, so he granted a trade monopoly to a group of merchants.
    
    
    In this case, a monopoly means that only merchants within the 
    group were allowed to trade for furs in the colony, and the merchants 
    would build settlements in North America and find French citizens to 
    live in them.
