Unit 1

Early Canada

  Read

  1. Read page 41 of the textbook to learn more about Samuel de Champlain and the founding of Quebec.

  2.  Read pages 42 to 44 of your textbook.
      • These pages explain the coureurs de bois. These men were adventurers who lived among and traded with the First Nations people.

      • The coureurs de bois were very important to the exploration of the new land because they acted as guides and interpreters for the French traders.

      • In 1670, two coureurs de bois, Pierre Radisson and Sieur des Groseilliers, founded the famous Hudson’s Bay Trading Company. (The company's logo is shown in Figure 1.) The company became very successful from its furs and is still a popular store in Canada (although it is now owned by Americans).

      • One of the most iconic symbols of The Hudson’s Bay Company is its point blankets. These blankets were one of the main European items sought by First Nations people in exchange for beaver and other furs.
