Early Canada



In 1663, King Louis XIV took control of the colony from the merchants.

He set up a Sovereign Council to govern the colony.


The Sovereign Council was comprised of the following three parts.

  1. Governor: the King’s representative
  2. Intendant: in charge of day to day affairs of the colony
  3. Bishop: the head of the Church in the colony

Figure 2.3 shows the palace where the Intendant lived and where laws were established for the colony.
