  1. Read pages 45 and 46 of the textbook to learn more about the structure of the government of New France.

    The Catholic Church was very important because the colonists were all Catholic. Many priests, nuns, and missionaries lived in New France and supported the community in various ways.

  2. Read page 47 and the left column of page 48 of the textbook to learn about the role of the Catholic Church in New France.

    One of the problems in New France was the lack of women living there. The colony needed women to marry the colonists and start families to increase the population.

  3. Read page 48 and the left column of page 49 of the textbook, including Figure 2.18 to see how the King solved the population problem.

    The social structure of New France was based on the seigneurial system.

  4. Read pages 49 and 50 of the textbook to learn more about the seigneurial system.

    You can see how the land was divided in Figure 2.4.

    In what ways was life in New France different from life in France?

  5. Read page 50 of the textbook to find an answer to the following question.

    How did these differences influence the colonists’ views of their relationship to France?
