British traders at the Hudson’s Bay Company thought that First Nations people would bring furs to the Company themselves for trading.

The French began interfering with the British fur trade, which is what prevented this plan from working well.

When the British were not receiving the furs from the First Nations that they were expecting, British traders decided they would need to explore the interior of Canada themselves, just as the French had done to meet with First Nations groups and encourage them to trade.
