Continue to add answers to your Chapter 3: The British in North
America Notes document that you began working on in Lesson 1.
You will be working with the chapter notes for Lesson 3 as you read this lesson. -
In 1690, Henry Kelsey, who worked for the Hudson's
Bay Company, set off with a group of Cree to meet Aboriginal peoples
who could become trading partners with the British.
- Read pages 67 and 68 of the textbook, which introduces another
explorer, Anthony Henday, who traveled on foot all the way to what is
now Red Deer, Alberta, to meet Aboriginals.

Page 68 also explains the
pursuits of Samuel Hearne, who was looking for a northern river rich
with resources.
The routes these men took are marked on the map on page 68.
- Read the case study of the search for the Northwest Passage on
pages 70 and 71 of the textbook.
This explains the actions of Sir John Franklin, the first to search for the passage.
- James Cook was looking also for a route for the passage through the Pacific Coast. Read page 71 of the textbook to see if he found one.
