Unit 2

Towards Confederation

Unit 2 Introduction

How did military, economic, and political factors in the 1700s and 1800s lay the foundations for Canadian Confederation?

Everyone’s life has twists and turns - ups and downs that affect who we are and the directions of our lives.

A turning point is an event whose outcome can change everything.

What has been a major turning point in your life?  If you broke your leg just before you could try out for the soccer team, you would not have a chance to be part of the team.  That would be a turning point.  If your family moved recently, your environment and friends would change – another turning point.

  1. List some of the turning points in your own life.
Use them to produce a timeline titled, β€œThe Timeline of My Life”.

  2. From your timeline, choose one event that has had major consequences for you.  How has this event affected who you are today?

Canada has turning points, too.  The 1700s and 1800s were centuries of much turmoil in the land we now call Canada.  Many turning points occurred during these years that laid the foundations for Canadian Confederation.

The outcomes of military, economic, and political factors during this time affected greatly the outcomes for the creation of Canada.
