Unit 2

Towards Confederation

 Lesson 1

What was the most significant reason for the conflict between the British and the French, and how was it a factor in the deportation of the Acadians?

  • Acadians
  • deportation
  • fortress
  • neutral
  • superpower

Acadia was located between New France and the British Colonies.

What might make taking control of Acadia be so desirable for either the French or the British?  What might make this land important to the Mi’kmaq?

For France and Britain, Acadia represented a base for attacking each other and for protecting their own colonies and trade routes.

For the Mi’kmaq, Acadia was part of their homeland because they had a trading partnership with the French and became their allies.

French settlers had come to Acadia in 1604. By the time the struggle for Acadia occurred, several generations of Francophones, who were called Acadians, called Acadia home.
