Unit 2

Towards Confederation

Chapter 6 Overview

In Chapter 6, you will develop an understanding of Canada’s identity from 1763 to 1850.

You will learn how the rebellion in the Thirteen Colonies led to migration of Loyalists to Canada and how the War of 1812 and rebellions of Upper and Lower Canada led to changes in Canada and its identity.
Then, you will see how the Constitutional Act, the Act of Union, and responsible government laid the foundation for Canadian government and for Canadian identity.
At the end of this chapter, you will develop a presentation of Canada’s identity from the perspective of First Nations, French, or British.

At the end of Chapter 6, you should be able to answer the following questions:

  1. Why did people in British North America want government that was more democratic, and how did this produce challenges for them?
  2. How did the War of 1812 and its political consequences as well as the rebellions of 1837 affect the developing Canadian identity?
You will use Chapter 6: Becoming Canada of the textbook, Voices and Visions: A Story of Canada.
