The most significant factor that influences our identity is our history – our experiences.


Figure 6.2 is a map of the original thirteen colonies of the United States.

To look at the daily life you would find in a colony at that time, go to PBS.org.

In 1775, a rebellion occurred in Britain’s Thirteen Colonies.

Why were the colonists in the Thirteen Colonies so upset?

Under Britain’s rule...

  1. The colonies could trade only with Britain.
  2. The colonists had to pay high taxes to Britain for imported goods.
  3. The Quebec Act gave lands to Quebec and not the Thirteen Colonies.
  4. British Naval ships forced America sailors to serve with them.

These factors led to the War of Independence, which the British call the American Revolution.
