The most significant factor that influences our identity is our history β our experiences.
Figure 6.2 is a map of the original thirteen colonies of the United States.
To look at the daily life you would find in a colony at that time, go to PBS.org.
In 1775, a rebellion occurred in Britainβs Thirteen Colonies.
Why were the colonists in the Thirteen Colonies so upset?
Under Britainβs rule...
- The colonies could trade only with Britain.
- The colonists had to pay high taxes to Britain for imported goods.
- The Quebec Act gave lands to Quebec and not the Thirteen Colonies.
- British Naval ships forced America sailors to serve with them.
These factors led to the War of Independence, which the British call the American Revolution.
