The Rebellions

As the population of the colonies grew, tensions grew among the newcomers. People were unhappy that a governor appointed by Britain was controlling affairs in the colonies.

Read pages 139 to 142 of the textbook.

These pages discuss the government in the colonies and the rebellions of Upper and Lower Canada.

Page 139 shows how the colonies were governed.

The Constitutional Act of 1791 gave the British colonies a new form of government. Each colony had its own governor and an elected assembly.

By the 1830s, people were unhappy with the government. In Lower Canada, the Patriotes presented a resolution for changes, but Britain rejected it.

In Upper Canada, the Reformers issued their own resolution for changes, but it was also rejected.
