Chapter 8 Introduction

The Métis

The first Métis were the children of First Nations women and European men who came to North America to explore and trade for furs.

The largest number of Métis lived in Red River, Manitoba (present-day Winnipeg).

They shared a common identity of a Métis Nation, distinct from Europeans, Canadiens, and First Nations.

"We are Indian, we are white. We are rejected by them both. Although we are so lost between, we continue in our growth as a Métis."

Joel Anderson, a 10-year old Métis from Manitoba, 1982. (Source: page 169 of the textbook)
