In the early 1800s, Scottish nobleman Lord Selkirk purchased a large tract of land at the entrance of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers (present day Winnipeg) from the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Selkirk brought dozens of families from Scotland to this land to establish a great farming colony in the area.  However, this led to conflict between the Métis community and the new colonists.

Lord Selkirk may have been trying to create a Scottish identity or to promote a Scottish nation in the region. This was seen as a threat to the Métis identity and the Métis Nation.
