In the late 1800s, much of the Canadian prairies were considered part of the North-West Territories.
The North-West Territories were part of Canada and were governed by a lieutenant-governor and a small appointed council based in Regina.
In 1887, the territory was given four seats in the federal House of Commons, and in 1888 the council was replaced by an elected Legislative Assembly with 22 members.
