In 1881, approximately four and a half million people lived in Canada, including about
100 000 Aboriginals. Almost 90% of Canadians were of British or French decent, and most lived in eastern Canada. - Canadian Prime Minister Sir Wilfred Laurier stated, βThe twentieth century belongs to Canada.β He believed that Canadaβs economy would grow quickly, and that Canada would become a great world nation.
