Writing Conventions: the Backbone of English Language Arts


The content provided in the Writing Conventions Workshops are INFORMATIONAL only and you should use them as a resource to help improve your writing. It is important because it will help you become a more confident writer. It will also help improve your writing skills.


Use the information on these Moodle pages and Resourcelines 7/8 book as a reference to help you verify correct usage of the concepts discussed, address uncertainties, and solve problems that may arise as you work through all of the other units in this course.


We will focus on four areas in this unit:

  1. Words
  2. Phrases
  3. Sentence Structure 
  4. Punctuation

Each of the four areas above has a Workshop. In each workshop, there is a short lesson.


You are expected to use the skills learned in these Workshops in all of the other units in the course.




This unit will help you:

  1. examine sentence structure, parts of speech, punctuation and precise word choice

    1. commit to applying these concepts to your own writing

    1. become a more confident writer
