1.2 Lesson: "Our Material World"

Levels of  Communication

Target

Assignment

Language Arts has four levels of communication.

  1. Level 1. Basics (phonics/vocabulary/terminology/layout)

Basic communication involves the six strands of language arts: reading, writing, understanding images, representing, and listening and talking to others.

  1. Level 2. Previewing (title/chapter headings/summaries/graphics/headers/initial sentences/back covers)

Previewing is the ability to get the most out of the book, TV show, or music, within a short time. Effective previewing follows a plan.
  1. Level 3. Analyzing (breaking down a piece into its essential elements; visual, non-fiction, poetry, story elements such as form and structure, style, etc.)

Analysis is very thorough and complete viewing or reading for the sake of understanding. Understanding 'what a piece communicates' takes time.  Often, one answers organized questions.

  1. Level 4. Comparing (literary elements, themes or main ideas, etc.)

After examining a broad range of pieces, one can compare them. One asks, 'What are views of the others, on the same subject?' Because concepts transfer from one piece to another, by knowing a lot about a subject, you can discuss the topic intelligently with other people. People who know a lot about a subject or topic tend to be highly respected.

The focus of this lesson is on building Level 2 and Level 3 Communication skills.
