Point of View
The photograph in the textbook is excerpted from a book of various family photos arranged by country. In Our Material World, the photographer has exaggerated the phrase conspicuous consumption. Conspicuous means obvious or in full view of others. Consumption refers to buying and using goods. Therefore, conspicuous consumption means purchasing to show the level of wealth of a person. It means buying to show off or "keep up with the Joneses" (to keep up with what others have).
Compare the photo of the Balderas family's material possessions below to the photograph in the textbook. What differences do you notice?

The Castillo Balderas family of Guadalajara, Mexico, outside their home with all of their possessions. Photo courtesy Peter Menzel taken in 1994.
Quality of Life
Personal satisfaction with the conditions under which one lives, is known as quality of life.
"Happiness doesn't lie in conspicuous consumption... Happiness lies in the person sitting beside you and your ability to talk to them... Happiness is home. It is a state of mind. A place of communion and unconditional love. It is where, when you cross its threshold, you finally feel at peace."
~ Dennis Lehane
