Page 3 Canadian Space Achievements

Rocket technology developed during World War II opened new possibilities for space travel. After the war, the United States and the Soviet Union became involved in the "The Space Race".

  • Who would be the first to put an astronaut into orbit?
  • Who would be the first to orbit the moon?
  • Who would be the first to land on the moon?

This race was fueled by fear and the desire to deter the other superpower from attacking.

Strange But True

The Milky Way Galaxy is warped.  Not only that but it is eating other galaxies.

Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, told Time magazine, "I remember on the trip home on Apollo 11 it suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the earth.

I put up my thumb and shut one eye and my thumb blotted out the planet earth.

I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small." (Dec. 11,1972 "Space: The Greening of the Astronauts")

Compare and Contrast

Compare means identifying attributes or traits that are the same

Contrast means identifying those elements that are different.
  • How is the "Canadian Space Achievements" timeline similar to and different from "From Glenn to Glenn"?

"From Glenn to Glenn" demonstrates persistence in problem-solving throughout the history of North America's space program. In this unit you will also examine the Essential Questions

How can I solve problems successfully?

How do I react when I encounter a problem (threatened, challenged, helpless)? Why?

"What once was fueled by fear / Now has fifteen Nations orbiting together here."

International Space Station )"
