Page 4 Barriers to Communication

We communicate in various ways every day.

Have you ever said something to someone, either in person or virtually, and had them misinterpret what you said? How did you solve the problem? Have you ever spoken to someone whose first language is not English? Were you able to have a successful conversation? What did you do to help you understand?

Miscommunications can happen simply because the connotation of a word has changed. Some examples of words' connotation that have changed over time are:
  • Awfulโ€”Before, "awful" used to mean that someone was "awe-inspiring" or "worthy of awe", which more or less means that someone was incredible. Now, "awful" means "terrible", "nasty", or "bad."
  • Naughtyโ€”Before, "naughty" used to mean that you had "naught" or "nothing." Now, "naughty" means to behave badly.
  • Flirt โ€”Before, "flirt" used to mean to kick something away or flicking an open fan or making a brisk or jerking motion. Now, "flirt" means to play with someone's emotions and/or try to connect with someone you are attracted to.
Another reason miscommunication can happen can be due to other issues such as:
  • Language
  • Culture
  • Physical
  • Organization

Some examples of these could be:

Language
You are talking to a German exchange student and it is hard to communicate with one another. This is a language barrier.

Cultural
In Canada, giving someone a thumbs up typically means something along the lines of 'I'm good' or 'good luck'. However, in Bangladesh, a thumbs up is an insult. This is an example of a cultural barrier.

Physical
You are in a busy restaurant with a friend and it is loud and you are sitting across the table from one another and your friend says: "I can't believe that your favourite colour is blue!" You respond with, "What? I didn't get new shoes!" This is a result of a physical barrier. It is either too noisy, or you are too far away from one another.

Organizational
If you write an essay and it is not organized in a logical order, this can cause your reader confusion and can make the essay difficult to read and interpret. This is an example of an organizational barrier.
