Assignment

Most of us think our lives are boring. However, our friends and family members are usually interested in what we do and they often think our lives are very interesting. There are many ways to write, informally, about our lives:
  • Diary or journal writing
  • Email
  • Text Message
  • Letter
In Unit 2, we learned how to write a business letter. In your assignment following this lesson, you will practice your friendly letter skills. To review the friendly letter format, go to page 100 in your Resourcelines 7/8 textbook.

Diary/Journal Writing

Diary and journal entries are often very personal and private. This type of writing would be considered "friendly" simply because it is not formal, much like a business letter needs to be. A diary or journal entry is simply us writing down our thoughts and feelings.

Email

Depending on who we are emailing, an email can be considered a form of "friendly" writing because if we are emailing a friend or family member we will not be formal, but instead, we will be casual. When we are emailing our boss, however, we will be more formal as that is the expectation.

Text Message

A text message is also a "friendly" form of communication and is typically very casual. Often, when texting, people abbreviate.

For example: "What r u doing?" or "whats up?"

Lack of proper punctuation, spelling, and/or grammar make text messages extremely casual. Therefore, this is a very "friendly" form of writing.

Letter

As we know, a friendly letter is a casual letter that is written to a friend, family member, or teacher. The nature of a friendly letter is very light and "straightforward". For example, we write about our day or week, or about a trip or event in our life.

Remember, friendly letters are intended to be very casual and there are not as many rules for writing one as there are for writing a business letter.

In this lesson, you will...

  1. learn spatial organization

  1. create clear, varied, and connected sentences

  1. use precise words to write a descriptive paragraph
