Phrases or modifiers must always be placed so there will be no uncertainty about the words they modify.
If your phrases do not modify the right word, your sentences may become more humourous than you intend.
Exploding in a colourful display, John watched the fireworks. X
Hopefully John did not injure the people around him when he exploded.
The team found the crabs using a remotely operated submersible. X
After the boys got out of their cars, the girls hosed them down. X
John kicked the soccer ball off the back of an opponent's head which rolled into the goal for a score. X
Although there are different positions for modifiers, in general, it should stand as close as possible to the word it modifies.
Example: Two sisters reunited after 18 years at the checkout counter. X
Correct: After 18 years, two sisters reunited at the checkout counter.
Correct: At the checkout counter, two sisters reunited after 18 years.
